The collection includes title deeds, 1331-1792, for lands in Thorney, East Retford, Mattersey and Lound, Nottinghamshire, and also Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Sussex and for land and property in London (DD/N/187-194: 196-204). The collection also contains many papers showing the individual interests of different members of the family. These papers include the Midshipman's Journals, 1783-1788, of Christopher Nevile (DD/N/140-143), the Military papers, 1678 -1780, of his Father, Lt. Colonel George Nevile of the Nottinghamshire Militia (DD/N/215/1-39) and the ecclesiastical papers, of several clerics in the family, 1796-1885, (DD/N/145-183). There are also rentals and other estate papers, 1628-1805, (DD/N/122-125) and estate and personal account books, 1792-1849 (DD/N/126-129). This collection is formed of four deposits, the first of the larger deposits was made in 1954 and the second in 1957, two subsequent and smaller deposits were made in 1961 and 1962. The Thorney Estate, in the extreme east of Nottinghamshire County and close to Lincoln, has been held by the Neviles continuously since the 16th century. |
