Throsby's edition of Thoroton concludes that this family was a branch of the de Burstowe, or Bristowe family of Burstowe, Surrey, descending from Stephen Fitzhamon. Thoroton places John Bristowe as being possessed of Beesthorpe, and lands in Maplebeck and elsewhere in the county, in 1543. The earliest document in the collection to show the acquisition of lands in Beesthorpe is dated 1567. They became considerable owners in Caunton, and the family seat is depicted in Throsby, and described by him as "a spacious mansion" (1797). The family held lands in Elston at one period. In 1585, a younger son, William, purchased an estate at Twyford in Derbyshire. The two branches, and the two estates appear to have re-united at the beginning of the 19th. century. The family does not appear to have taken any prominent part in the larger affairs of the county. Thomas Bristow of Elston was member of the commission of 1654 for removing scandalous ministers in Nottinghamshire, one of the commission for the shire under Major-General Whalley, and M.P. for the shire in the Parliament of 1659, but he was probably not of the Beesthorpe branch. Samuel Bristowe was sheriff of Nottinghamshire in 1799. In the 19th. century, Samuel Boteler Bristowe, Q.C. was Liberal M.P. for Newark 1870 - 1880, and later, a County Court Judge: his brother, Sir Henry Fox Bristowe, Q.C., was Vice-Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. A son of the former brother, the Rev. Charles John Bristowe, was the first Director of Education for Nottinghamshire (1902 - 1911)
