Administrative / biographical background:

The parish originated from the Roman Catholic chapel at Callaly Castle, where a priest had been based for many centuries. When the castle passed into non-Catholic hands in 1877, there were moves to build a Catholic church to replace the castle chapel, and St Mary's was opened in 1881.
