Description:

Letter from Thomas Sharp

1. Besides being the incumbent of Rothbury, this Sharp was Archdeacon of Northumberland, Prebendary of Durham, Southwell, and York, and A Trustee of the Lord Crewe Charity. He and Sir John were therefore brother (cf. end of letter from Sharp) Prebendaries.

2. The letter was presumably addressed to Sir John's residence at Durham.

3. 'Cuddy Brass' (mentioned in the P.S.) is the Cuthbert Brass mentioned earlier. At Durham he was a chorister, 1717-27, and a lay-clerk, 1727-81, and he took charge of the choristers when James Hesletine the organist went to Finedon for three months in 1748. Hesletine, who was organist at Durham, 1710-63, had been a chorister at the Chapel Royal until 1707.
