Administrative / biographical background:

The Fellowes family originated in Worcestershire and rose to prominence under William Fellowes (1660-1724) a successful barrister who purchased the Eggerford estate in Devon in 1718. His second son William Fellowes (1705-1775) acquired Shotesham Park in 1731 and established the Norfolk branch of the family. Known for his philanthropic interests, particularly the founding of the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, he made Robert Fellowes (1742-1829), his second son, his heir. Robert employed Sir John Soane to relocate the house at Shotesham in 1784 and was succeeded by his equally long-lived son Robert (1779-1869) and grandson Robert (1817-1915).

Families whose papers were acquired by the purchase of their estates or by marriage include the Doyleys of Shotesham, the Mingays of Arminghall, the Berneys of Braconash (by the marriage of Robert Fellowes I), and the Eyres of Wiltshire (following the marriage of Mary daughter of William Fellowes of Eggesford to Robert Eyre of New House, Wiltshire
