The archive of the Warwick and Leamington Constituency Labour Party includes minutes of the Executive Committee and the General Management Committee 1919-29, 1940-74; financial records, 1922-79 (incomplete series); correspondence files, 1946-81; annual reports, 1959-71 (incomplete); other publications, c.1963-74; press-cuttings and photographs, 1978-80. Sub-groups include the reminiscences of local party members, E. V. Crumpton and Reuben Wright, regarding the period 1919-77.

Researchers should note that the Centre holds a TUC registry file on Leamington and Warwick Trades Council (ref. MSS.292/79L/7). In addition, there are deposits of Leamington and Warwick Trades Council minutes and financial papers covering the years 1921-34 at the Warwickshire County Record Office (refs. CR1366, CR1897). Kenilworth was for many years part of the Warwick and Leamington constituency. For this reason, the minute book of Kenilworth Labour Party, 1933-48, is held in this deposit (ref. MSS.133/6/3/1). Financial records of Kenilworth Labour Party, 1961-75, are also held at the Centre (ref. MSS.167).

Immediate source of acquisition:

The archives of the Warwick and Leamington Constituency Labour Party were deposited at the Modern Records Centre in 1976 and 1982. The Centre is very grateful to Dr. Peter Byrd and Dave Deaton for their efforts in transferring the archives to the Centre. A copy of the transcript of the interview with E. V. Crumpton (ref. MSS.133/6/1/3) has been deposited at the Imperial War Museum. This catalogue replaces earlier box lists of the archive. The archives are open for the use of researchers although the permission of the Warwick and Leamington Constituency Labour Party needs to be obtained before material based on the archives is published.

Administrative / biographical background:

Warwick and Leamington Constituency Labour Party was founded in 1919 as the Warwick and Leamington Divisional Labour Party. Though the constituency has changed in terms of its boundaries, the Warwick and Leamington Constituency Labour Party has continued its existence ever since. Until the mid 1950s, the Warwick and Leamington Constituency Labour Party formed the political section of the Leamington and Warwick Trades Council.
