Nos. 4/29-59, inclusive, are the property of Walsall Trades Council and are deposited by them. As they were in the possession of Alderman Whiston at the time of his death, they became mixed with his own papers.

 

The collection was originally deposited in four sections, which have now been merged for convenience. Nos. 4/1-37, 39-42, 44-50, 53, 54, 56-58, 60-64, 73-94, formed accession no. 4.; No. 4/51 was originally accession no 40; Nos. 4/55, 65-71, 95-102, were originally accession no. 61; Nos. 4/38, 43, 52, 55, 59, 72, 103, 110, were originally accession no. 92, and Nos. 4/97, 111, 112, 125, were originally accession no. 93.

Administrative / biographical background:

Alderman John Whiston, O.B.E., who died on the 22nd June, 1972, had played a prominent part in the political affairs of Walsall and the West Midlands for over 50 years. He served as Secretary of the Walsall Trades Council from 1916, and was elected as a Councillor of Walsall County Borough in 1930, becoming leader of the Labour group on the Council, and serving as Mayor in 1944-5. He was elected Alderman in October 1945, and received the Freedom of the Borough in 1956.

 

Among his many other activities were the Chairmanships of the Council's Public Works Committee, the Local Employment Committee, Walsall Health Executive Council and the Tuberculosis After Care Committee.

 

Alderman Whiston was awarded the O.B.E. in 1952, and was also honoured by the T.U.C., who contributed to a local subscription fund for a trades union official for the first time in their history. His papers, now deposited in the Walsall Central Library, reflect many of these activities.
