Historical Note The first surviving minutes of Cape Library Reading Rooms are concerned with establishing classes and lectures in technical and arts subjects for working people. By 1858 the Library was in financial difficulties and the following year was succeeded by Smethwick Library, alias Smethwick Library Reading Room; Smethwick Library Institute; Library, Reading Room Literary Institute. Smethwick Library Committee resolved at its annual meeting in March 1877 "to transfer to the Free Libraries Committee [of Smethwick Local Board of Health] the present undertakings of the Library and Reading Room with the effects thereto belonging". |
