MS 4000/5/3/5/3/1 to 11 are recordings of a weekend seminar held in March 1966, by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger with the singers from the BMFC. The subjects covered included types of folk song, traditional singing styles and voices, ornamentation and variation in singing, musical accompaniment etc., illustrated with musical examples from various singers.

 

MS 4000/5/3/5/3/12 to 18 are recordings of a weekend seminar held in October 1966, by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger where the songs and singing styles of various BMFC singers were analysed and criticised and the development of singing and relationship with an audience discussed.

 

MS 4000/5/3/5/3/19 to 31 are recordings of a seminar held in July 1967 by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger with the singers from the BMFC on characterisation, story telling and identification with the songs.

 

MS 4000/5/3/5/32 is a lecture by Stephen Sedley on printers of broadsides and the folk tradition.

 

MS 4000/5/3/5/3/33 and /39 to 41 are recordings of a lecture by A.L.Lloyd and the musical illustrations for the lecture, to a group of the Workers Education Association, being part of a series on 'Folk Song and Folk Studies - An Historical Survey' organised by the W.E.A. in 1967 -1968, for which Charles Parker was the tutor. A.L.Lloyd was speaking on the world history of folk music.

 

MS 4000/5/3/5/3/34 to /38 are recordings of a seminar held in February 1969 by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger with the singers from the BMFC on new folk revival songs and somgwriting.

 

MS 4000/5/3/5/3/42 to 43 are recordings of a seminar by E.P.Thompson on the practice of the 'sale' of wives in British folk custom.

 

MS 4000/5/3/5/3/44 is criticism of Charles Parker's singing and performance skills.

 

MS 4000/5/3/5/3/45 is a recording of a talk by Ewan MacColl on Folk Revival Clubs in Britain.

 

MS 4000/5/3/5/3/46 to 49 are recordings of an illustrated lecture by Bob Thompson and Mike Herring of Huntingdon about collecting folk music in the Fenland areas of East Anglia.

MS 4000/5/3/5/3/84 is a recording of a discussion with George Thompson on Marxism, the need for a British Communist Party and the British mining industry.

 

MS 4000/5/3/5/3/85 is a recording of aa appaearance by Joan Jara, speaking about her husband Victor Jara, his death and the political situation in Chile and playing his songs.

 

MS 4000/5/3/5/3/86 is a recording of childrens' singing games.

 

MS 4000/5/3/5/3/87 to 91 appear to originally have been recordings of a lecture/seminar/classes by George Thomson called 'The Human Essence', according to the tape box annotations, but this seems to have been recorded over and the tapes now have various folk recordings such as childrens' singing games, copies of some of the 'Song Carriers' radio programmes and copies of part of the seminar by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger on songs and songwriting found on MS 4000/5/3/5/3/35, 36.
