Administrative / biographical background:

The Birmingham and Midland Folk Centre was founded in 1965 by Charles Parker and various folk singers and musicians from Birmingham and area - such as Pam and Alan Bishop, Joan Smith, Roy Palmer, Olga Nicholls.

The aim of the organisation was to collect and preserve folk songs and stories from the West Midlands before they were lost and to disseminate these through performance, publication etc. The organisation also aimed to develop a regional style of singing and to arrange seminars and concerts in Birmingham and the Midlands by leading folk singers and folklorists of the world.

In 1969 they produced an LP of Midlands songs called 'The Wide Midlands' (Topic), and a book, 'Songs of the Midlands'.

Some of the concerts arranged included performances by Ravi Shankar from India; Renee Zosso from Switzerland; Sandra Mantovani and Bruno Pianta from Italy; Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger, and A.L.Lloyd.

The papers of the Birmingham Midland Folk Centre, which are in the Charles Parker Archive (MS 4000/1/8/13), include lists and indexes to the Birmingham and Midland Folk Centre tapes as well as information on some of the various projects and performances organised by the Birmingham and Midland Folk Centre.
