Charlie Burke worked as an engineer at the BBC in Birmingham and retired c1974/1975. He was born in 1918 and spent his childhood in the Spring Hill area of central Birmingham. The recordings concentrate on his childhood reminiscences and descriptions of the local area, trades, street sellers, markets, food and entertainment (MS 4000/5/1/8/1-3). The final recording is of Charlie Burke's family singing at home (MS 4000/5/1/8/4).

 

The interviews are all conducted by Charles Parker who is particularly interested in the use of local dialect by Charlie Burke.
