This collection consists of the records of the Birkenhead County Borough Council and its predecessors, including the Birkenhead Poor Law Union. Records are arranged according to department and cover all aspects of local government. Improvement Commisioners records include records of the planning of Birkenhead, the purchase of the ferry service and the planning of Birkenhead Park, the first English municipal park. Also included are the records of the Birkenhead Workhouse at Tranmere and the records of the Town Clerk during the Second World War which include civil defence measures and evacuation.
