Administrative / biographical background:

Established in 1846 as the Birkenhead Ladies Charitable Institution and Lying-in Hospital; supported by voluntary subscriptions. The later name was adopted in 1913. The hospital came under the control of the Birkenhead HMC in 1948, and of the Wirral Area Health Authority in 1974. It was closed in October 1978.
