Administrative / biographical background:

The Lancashire Estates of the Marquees of Salisbury came to the family through the marriage of James the 2nd Marquees to Frances Mary, daughter of Bamber Gascoyne of Childwall, in 1821. The estate was first brought together by Isaac Greene (1678-1749) a successful attorney of Prescot, Liverpool and Childwall, details of which ware given in 'Isaac Greene' by R. Stewart-Brown (1921). He acquired Eltonhead manor and Hall in Sutton in 1712, the manors of Childwall, Little and Much Woolton, with demesnes of Childwall and Little Woolton, in 1718, and the manors of West Derby, Everton, and Wavertree with certain other premises, in 1722. By his marriage in 1725 to Mary Aspinall he became lord of Hale with extensive estates there. The whole was inherited by his two daughters Ireland and Mary, who divided the property in 1751, Ireland taking her mother's portion, and Mary taking the rest. The latter married Bamber Gascoyne in 1757. Their eldest son Bamber Gascoyne (M.P. for Liverpool, 1780-1796) had one daughter, Frances Mary, who succeeded to the estate and took it with her on marriage to Lord Salisbury.
