Administrative / biographical background:

John Nicholson was the second surviving child of Matthew Nicholson (1677-1735/36). He attended Stand Grammar School (near Prestwich, Manchester) until c. 1731 when he probably entered his father's business in partnership with his brother James. On 19 Sep. 1740 he married Ann, daughter of Rev. Thomas Baldwin, vicar of Leyland, co. Lancs. Their only child, Sarah, died in Dec. 1741 aged 6 months. John Nicholson died on 12 Mar. 1741/42. His letters always bore the signature"Jno Nicholson Jun." to distinguish himself from John Nicholson (c. 1692-1754) of Liverpool, linen-draper, cousin of Matthew Nicholson.
