Samuel was the eldest surviving child of Matthew (1677-1735/36) and Dorothy Nicholson (see 920 NIC/1 and 2). He attended Stand Grammar School (near Prestwich, Manchester) until 1731 and was a student at Glasgow University from 1733 to 1735. In 1735 and 1736, with a view to entering the ministry, he studied with Dr. Caleb Rotherham of Kendal (see 920 NIC/1/1/1 and 3/7). From 1736 to c. 1739 he studied medicine at Edinburgh. He continued his studies in Paris and Leyden, graduating at Leyden in 1741. His career was unsettled after this date and he died unmarried on 29 Jul. 1749 at Allerton, Liverpool.
