Administrative / biographical background:

Albert was the son of Robert (1802-1886) (see 920 NIC/17) and Margaret Nicholson. He was the younger brother of Francis Nicholson (1843-1925) who did much work towards the publication of The Memorials of the family of Nicholson (see introductory notes).

 

Throughout his life Albert Nicholson lived in or around Manchester. He worked in his father's firm (see 920 NIC/17, notes) and ultimately became head of Nicholson, Sons & Co. Ltd.

 

Like his father he was an active Unitarian and from 1919-1921 he was President of the Unitarian Historical Society. He was also sometime president of the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society and of the Manchester Dickens Fellowship.

 

In 1873 he married Jane Ann Scott. See pp. 152-153.
