James was the third surviving child of Thomas (1753-1825) and Mary (c. 1757-1803) Nicholson. He was educated at Dr. Shepherd's school in Gateacre (see 920 NIC/9/16) and in 1811 went to Ireland "to learn the linen trade" from his future brother-in-law, Robert Thomson of Ravensdale (see 920 NIC/13/2). In 1812 he returned to Liverpool and worked for his father, then later for a sugar merchant. According to p. 106 "he commenced business as a linen merchant" in 1818 and also dealt in other Irish goods. In 1828 he ceased to do business in Liverpool and moved to Bordeaux where he went into business as a wine-merchant. He died unmarried at Ravensdale in 1850. See pp. 105-106. |
