Administrative / biographical background:

Matthew Nicholson was born in Blackshaw, Dumfriesshire, in April 1677. It is not known exactly when he settled in Liverpool but he was admitted to the freedom of the borough on 26 Jan. 1702/03. He appears to have set up business as a linen draper but soon expanded to become a general merchant. For the greater part of his business life both his house and his warehouse were in Dale Street. Matthew Nicholson was a member of the Kaye Street Chapel but according to Orchard op. cit., when he died in February 1735/36 "he was so esteemed, although a Unitarian, that his funeral sermon was preached by the rector in the parish church ...".
