Catalogue description Papers of H.R.H. William Frederick, 2nd Duke of Gloucester

These papers, purchased from Guy B. Hall, of Rotherwick Road, Golders Green, London, on 6 October, 1926, formed part of the private papers of H.R.H. Duke of Gloucester (1776-1834), taken from his library. In his correspondence to the Chief Librarian, Mr. Hall stated that the library had "come into his hands for disposal", but did not specify the circumstances. He also stated that he intended selling "the rest of the documents out of the library, at Sotheby's and Puttick & Simpson's next month" [i.e. October 1926]. There is no record of a sale in the catalogues of Sotheby's for 1926 available in this library.

The papers numbered 3-12 below were originally numbered 1-11. Of these, Mr. Hall stated that "the copy of letter no.5. is missing". He also said: "There are two copies of the précis (verified) ...... However, only one copy of the "Précis" i.e. item 1. below is extant. Mr. Hall did not mention the copy Resolutions item 2. below.

On the renewal of war with the French, fresh measures for the defence of Liverpool became necessary.

Prince William Frederick of Gloucester was appointed "Military Commander of the North West District", with headquarters in Liverpool. Arriving in September 1803, he took up residence in St. Domingo House, Everton, and remained in Liverpool for three years.
