George Brown's Memoirs relate to his early life and training with the family firm of Alexander Brown & Sons of Baltimore, his association with Thomas Bullit Harrison in Mexico, and Mexican affairs, c. 1820 - 1830, his stay in Liverpool from 1829, his period as a stockbroker and his joining Brown, Shipley & Co., merchant Bankers of Liverpool, in 1847.

Administrative / biographical background:

George Alexander Brown was the son of Stewart Brown and Mary Hardman of Philadelphia. His father, born in 1769 in Ireland, was the brother of Alexander Brown and like him, emigrated to Baltimore. George Alexander Brown's cousin was Sir William Brown who founded the firm of Brown, Shipley & Co., of Liverpool.
