Administrative / biographical background:

The Agricultural Society for the Hundred of West Derby was founded at Hoult's Inn, Prescot, in June 1801, for the improvement of agriculture in the area and the encouragement of industry in agriculture by the distribution of prizes for merit. John Joseph Atherton and Edward Falkner were the principal officers and many important local men were associated with the Society including:

 

Henry Blundell, William Earle, Thomas Leyland, James Okill, James Orrell, William Roscoe, Thomas Staniforth, etc. The activities of the Society were suspended in October, 1813 "owing to the state of the funds and the continued absence of members".
