Immediate source of acquisition:

The papers were deposited on indefinite loan by C.E. Turner, Esq., of Messrs. E.W. Turner and Son. They were found in the loft of his house, "Hillcroft", Woolton in October 1920, and are presumed to have been there since the house was built in 1835. The transcripts in 380 TUO 5 and 6 were deposited with the papers but it is not known by whom they were made.

Administrative / biographical background:

David Tuohy is described in Gore's Liverpool directory for 1781 as "merchant, 48 Old Hall St." These papers reveal that he was considerably involved in the slave trade.
