Administrative / biographical background:

The first meeting of the 30 Club was held at Exchange Hotel, Tithebarn Street, on 2 December 1895. Its membership was ultimately to be made up to 30 (hence its name) and members were to meet every alternative Monday evening at the Exchange Hotel. The aim of the Club was to encourage discussion - "...... conversations shall be free and unlimited as to subject but it shall be expected that the tendency of the transactions of the Club shall incline towards subjects of Art and Literature. The Chairman of the evening shall have the privilege of guiding the conversations within the channel contemplated as above .... [and he] shall be required to write in a Minute Book .... a report of the general conversations held during the evening ......" (see 367 THI 1/1, pp. 2-3).

 

The Club was disbanded in October 1925. Its records were handed to Mr. G.T. Shaw, Chief Librarian of Liverpool, one of its members, so that he could preserve them in his official capacity (see 367 THI 2 below).
