Administrative / biographical background:

The YZ Club was founded by James Picton in 1870, describing itself as a literary and social club. Originally, there were twelve members, drawn from all sections of Liverpool society, who met once a month for dinner and conversation, the latter being the main object of the club and covering an unlimited range of topics. Full details on the history of the club, its name, objects and members, are given in the preface to the copy minute book (see 1 below). The club's minutes were recorded by the members in turn. The preface states that "only a few copies" of the minutes were reproduced for club members. The original minute books were grangerised with autographs, old documents, etc., which are not reproduced in the copies. According to 2/1 (below) the club was still in existence in 1913.
