Administrative / biographical background:

The City of Liverpool Officers' Club was set up "to provide comfortable quarters and Club amenities for Officers of His, Majesty's Forces stationed in the City of Liverpool and district, at a cost well within the means of junior Officers." At first membership was confined to Officers serving on the Active List of the Royal Navy, Army, or Royal Air Force; members of the Committee; and any ex-Officers of H.M. Forces specially recommended by the Committee, although from July 1943 Officers of the Women's branches of the Armed Forces and all commissioned officers of the Naval Army and Air Forces of countries allied to Great Britain were permitted to apply for membership.

The Officers' Club was opened on 1 March 1941 by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Alderman Sir Sydney Jones. The Club was located in the former North Western Hotel, Lime Street. During the nine years it was in existence some 26,586 officers were elected to membership.

According to the minutes of the General Committee, 8 September 1848, the de-requisitioning of the premises was to proceed as quickly as possible. It was initially agreed to close the club on 13 November 1948, although this date was later put back to 31 May 1949 and the balance of the Club's account of £400 was divided equally between the Officers Association and the S.S.A.T.A. Officers Section.
