Lay brotherhoods for charitable effort were founded by various conferences of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul during the nineteenth century. Each brotherhood had two classes of members: honorary and active. The latter visited the poor of their district and recommended relief to deserving cases. This was dispensed by means of tickets, usually exchangeable for food. |
