Administrative / biographical background:

The Society commenced under the title Liverpool Central Relief Society, inaugurated at a public meeting held on 28th Jan. 1863 under the presidency of the Mayor. The Society was the result of the amalgamation of the District Provident Society, Strangers Friend Society and Charitable Society. It was run by a Committee of Management, later Executive Committee, reporting to an Annual General Meeting. The fuller title was adopted in Dec. 1874. The Society appears to have existed until 1932, and the Local History Library has printed reports, 1863/64-1923/24.
