This Committee was originally appointed as a subcommittee by the Workhouse Committee at a meeting held on 4 May 1866. It was resolved "That this Committee on behalf of the Select Vestry adopt the suggestion of the Health Committee and undertake the management of the vessel upon which the Cholera patients (if any) from on board the Helvetia may be placed" and that certain members ".... be appointed a Sub-Committee to carry out the foregoing resolution" (see Workhouse Committee Minute Book, 1863 - 1866, 353 SEL 5/7, below, pp. 473 - 474). There was a considerable outbreak of cholera in Liverpool in 1866 and from 17 May 1866 this Committee is known as the Special Committee on Cholera.
