Administrative / biographical background:

The Liverpool Peace Society was founded at an unknown date, possibly in 1857, the earliest date of the records in this collection. In an article in the Liverpool Review (April 27, 1878, pp.4-5) it is referred to as a branch of the London Peace Society, and elsewhere, (do. 22 March 1880, pp.10-11) as a Liberal organisation. Its object was to promote peace and in particular, the superiority of arbitration over war as a method of solving international grievances, by means of public meetings, pamphlets, letters to the press etc. It was dissolved, probably in 1925, after which date it disappears from the Liverpool Directories.
