John Leigh Philips (1761-1814) was an important figure in the Manchester of his day. He was businessman, soldier, naturalist and patron of the arts. With his brother, Francis, he continued his grandfather Nathaniel Philips's, silk manufacturing business under the name of J. L. His collection of natural history specimens form the nucleus of the Manchester Natural History Museum, while his collection of books, prints and paintings were the subject of a nine day sale after his death. He was a member of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society in whose Memoirs and Proceedings, 1890, 1900 and 1901, are articles by F. J. & W.B.
