The business in Market Street was founded by William Blain who was born in 1828, and attended Bank Street School. He trained professionally in Preston, and gained further experience in Guernsey under Thomas Millais, cousin of the artist. He returned to Bolton in 1851 to start his own business in Deansgate and then in Newport Street. He acquired the premises at 25, Market Street in 1854. The firm of William Blain and Sons Ltd celebrated their centenary in 1951. The business has since been taken over by James Hart (Wholesale and Manufacturing Chemists) who formerly traded in Newport Street, Bolton. The records listed below relate to both firms. |
