Administrative / biographical background: |
Under the Bury Improvement Act of 1872, the Bury & Radcliffe and the Haslingden & Rawtenstall Waterworks Companies were taken over by the Bury Improvement Commissioners, who themselves were replaced by Bury Borough Council in 1876. The Bury and District Joint Water Board, whose constituent members were the Municipal Boroughs of Haslingden, Radcliffe and Rawtenstall, and the Urban Districts of Kearsley, Little Lever, Ramsbottom, Tottington and Whitefield, was set up in 1900. In July 1935, the Bury and District Joint Water Board changed its name to the Irwell Valley Water Board. Under the provisions of the Bolton Water Order of 1962, the Board was replaced by Bolton County Borough Council. The North West Water Authority became responsible for water supplies throughout the area on 1st April 1974 |
