Administrative / biographical background:

What was to become Farnworth Grammar School originated as an endowed school in 1715, when James Roscoe and his son John gave a piece of land and a new building bordering Dixon Green, for the education of the children of Farnworth. One of the trustees appointed by the Deed of James and John Roscoe was Nathaniel Dorning of Birch House, Farnworth whose will of 1728 gave a financial foundation for provision of a school master, the instruction of children in Latin and English, and the purchase of Bibles and Catechisms. In 1744 more land was donated by Peter Rasbotham for the building of a schoolmaster's house, but by 1856 both school and school master's house had become unfit for use. New premises were constructed on nearby Albert Road at the time known as Worsley Road opening on January 15th 1862, and in 1868 the school received a bequest of £1,450 of Birkenhead Railway Stock from William Jackson Rideout. Both the Dixon Green Fund and the Rideout Fund remained part of the financial structure of the school until it's closure.

In 1919 Lancashire County Council assumed financial responsibility for the school, and due to increased numbers the school moved into temporary premises, taking over the nearby New Jerusalem School buildings until the completion of new school buildings in Bolton Road in 1922. Girls were admitted to the new school which continued to expand until it's closure in 1982. Under the nation-wide re-organisation of secondary education scheme grammar schools were abolished, and Farnworth's pupils merged with several local schools to form Little Lever Secondary School and separate sixth form colleges. The Albert Road premises were demolished in 1977 and the Bolton Road premises, despite much local protest, were demolished in 1987
