Before 1887, the Union was known as "Bolton and District Card Grinders' and Strippers' Association". It later became part of the Bolton and District Union of Textile and Allied Workers. Apart from Bolton itself, the Union has had branches in Adlington, Atherton, Chorley, Farnworth, Leigh, Patricroft, Pendlebury and Tyldesley.
