The Union was founded in 1865 as 'The Excelsior Friendly Society of Toilet and Marseilles Quilt Weavers by Power'. It was reorganised in 1880 under the title of 'The Power Loom Weavers' and Winders' Association for Bolton and Surrounding Districts'. Membership included weavers, winders and warpers in factories in Ainsworth, Astley, Bolton, Eccles, Farnworth, Glazebury, Golborne, Horwich, Kearsley, Leigh. Little Hulton, Patricroft, Turton, Tyldesley, Walkden and Westhoughton
