Administrative / biographical background: |
Prior to World War 1 the Railway Vehicle Builders was the only union for craftsmen working in the mines. In 1920, they broke away to form the Lancashire and Cheshire Colliery Tradesmen and Kindred Workers' Association, with their main office at Wigan and with W.A.Hipwood as secretary. This Association continued until 1945, when it became a constituent association of the National Union of Miners (which itself was formed from the Miners' Federation of Great Britain) to become N.U.M. Lancashire Tradesmen's Area. Due to the closure of a large number of mines in the area, the Tradesmen finally merged with the N.U.M. North Western Area in July 1968, and the Craft section ceased to exist. |
