Administrative / biographical background:

Donor's grandfather Joseph Simon Webber was born in 1876 in Bjostic Brzostek, Galicia, the son of Elimelech (Michael) Viber (Weber) and Rebecca (Rivka) Rachel Stein (2nd marriage for both). Joseph Simon was one of 3 children, he came with his family to London some time in the 1880's. The family first appear in the 1891 census.In 1896 J. S. Webber worked as a hawker in Swansea.

 

In 1898 he was an auctioneer taking a room in a shop and selling gold. Later he became sole agent for the American Electric Co., and was also chief importer of gas mantles. The firm he eventually founded - Pifco was in existence from December 1900 until 2001 when the company was sold by the grandson of the founder Michael Webber.

 

Joseph Simon married Rose, daughter of Maier and Blima Heller (from Jassy, Rumania) on 15th September 1897.
