Publication note:

This Memoir was incorporated in the 'Memoirs of the life and writings of the late John Coakley Lettsom', Vol. II, pp. 191-207, which Dr. Thomas Joseph Pettigrew [1791-1865], published in three volumes in 1817.

Administrative / biographical background:

For James Neild, philanthropist and prison-reformer, cf. D.N.B.

There seems to be a slight discrepancy as regards the spelling of this name. He is called 'Nield' in this MS., and in Pettigrew's printed 'Memoirs of Lettsom': the D.N.B., however, enters him as 'Neild', though it has a reference from 'Nield'.

From the Pettigrew Collection.
