Catalogue description Ogdon Papers

Comprises sketches & complete works in MS by John Ogdon, almost entirely unpublished. Virtually every item has additional notes on covers eg. telephone numbers, memoranda, shopping lists, appointments, suggested programmes. Also includes some writings, copies of works by modern British composers, and administrative materials.

Order created (by Skye Atman?) preserved - basis of this order is unknown. Numbering allocated by Skye Atman when compiling an inventory of works prior to their (abortive) sale through Christie's/Sotheby's in 1991. The following 14 items listed in the inventory were not found during cataloguing at the RNCM in April 2003 - it is probable that they were not received at the College when the MSS were purchased in 1991 (although there is nothing in the patchy records to indicate that they had been removed, or that the purchase from Brenda Lucas Ogdon by the RNCM did not include all the items listed in the inventory). Purchased by RNCM from Brenda Lucas Ogdon 1991 - £4,000. Manchester Evening News had given £500 'for the story'. [See minutes of Library Advisory Committee, 30 Oct 1991, p.4]

On preservation grounds, file covers have been discarded where they bear nothing more than the titles of their contents. Those with annotations, or which are large enough to contain oversize works have been retained.
