Letters and papers of the Talbot family award by Sir William Boteler, of Biddenham, Beds., Kt., in a dispute between Oliver Luke, son of Sir Samuel Luke, and John Haselden, of Haynes, Beds., esq., concerning a lease of the manor house at Haynes, 23 February 1653/4. Mentions a 'raspeberry garden' (ff.1-2); speech by Heneage Finch, 1st Earl of Nottingham, Lord Chancellor, in answer to a petition for summoning Parliament from the City of London presented to Charles II at Hampton Court, 10 May 1681 (ff.3-4); articles of agreement between William Boteler, of Biddenham, Beds., Esq., and Thomas Battison, the elder, of Biddenham, concerning the renewal of a lease, 26 October 1681. Witnessed by John and Anne Gardiner (f.5); letter from Anne Gardiner to her 'sister', 14 March 1693/4, on her health (f.7); letter from Robert Price to Mrs. Matthews [probably the wife of Charles Matthews of Castell-y-Mynach, Glam.], 13 September 1706, describing society at Bath (Somerset) and the forthcoming election (f.9); letter from William Turberville to the same, 5 May 1708, accounting for financial payments (f.10); letters to William Talbot, Earl Talbot (1761), from his wife and others, 1731-6. They include (ff.15-29v) seven letters from Thomas Rundle, Bishop of Derry (1735), [April-May 1734], in which he expresses his gratitude to the Talbot family, discusses Talbot's election for Glamorgan and entry into public life, and gives social and political news (ff.11-38); letters of condolence to Lady Cecil Rice, daughter of William Talbot, Earl Talbot, on the death of her husband George Rice, politician, with (ff.51-5) a memorial inscription for him, 1779 (ff.39-55). Also a lock of hair of Henrietta Howard, wife of Charles Howard, 9th Earl of Suffolk, and mistress of George II, 18th century, mounted inside cover. Purchased, 1980 (Christie's, 16 April item 56).
