Walton was also nephew to a former servant of the Earl, Nycolas Nowell, the writer's half brother, and had travelled, knew Latin and law French, but was not 'exquesite' in arithmetic and numbering. 1p. The Earl of Leicester to the Earl of Shrewsbury, from Court, 15 May 1569, on behalf of his friend Bower, one of the Queen's serjeants-at-arms, who wished to have the wardship of 'young Swifte,' but found that Knyfton, a servant of the Earl, was also applying for it. If.Knyfton will give it up, he promises help in obtaining another wardship. [Probably Robert Swifte, son of William Swift of Rotherham, whose will, dated 20 Aug. 1568 was proved 15 July 1569. [Surtees Society, cxxi, 51-5]. A John Knyveton was serving the Earl of Shrewsbury in 1571. The Earl of Leicester to the Earl of Shrewsbury, from Hampton Court, 22 October [1576], describing events in the Low Countries. Ghent is probably taken. The Spaniards, of whom there are three or four thousand with some Germans and Italians, are at Antwerp and Bruges, but few other large towns are for them. The States declare that their object is to assert their ancient liberties. The Queen is sending Dr. Thomas Wilson to mediate and persuade them to return to their allegiance to Spain with security for their liberties. She will also send someone to Spain. Sir William Cecil, later Lord Burghley, to the Earl of Shrewsbury, from Westminster, 12 January 1564/5, relating to the mortgage and forfeiture to certain London aldermen of some lands of the late Earl of Rutland, who had directed in his will what lands should be sold. Cecil has persuaded the Queen to pay £1800 on certain conditions to avoid the sale, and he encloses a deed for the Earl's signature. 1p. Address: Justice of the Forests beyond Trent.

Anthony Barly to [the Earl of Shrewsbury], from London, 23 June 1570, informing him of the return of one of his ships to Gravesend, and referring to its unsuitability, save as a man-of-war, owing to the large crew needed, the small storage space and above all its great draught. Gilbert Talbot has gone to Spires and will join Henry Cavendish at Hamburg. Two hundred calivers and burgonets bought at Hamburg for the Earl, and will be shipped to Hull by a merchant at York. The difficulty of getting velvet and selling lead. The war between the Venetians and Turks is a great hindrance to trade. He is arranging freight of 14 tuns of wine. 3pp. Address: My lord.

She has sent letters to the Queen and the Ambassador, which the Earl has opened before sending, and she desires an interview with Queen Elizabeth. Mentions his difficulty in obtaining a warrant from the Lord Treasurer and Sir Walter Mildmay for its payment, the latter claiming part was due to the Crown for a debt from his office of the Butlerage. News from France that the Admiral [Gaspard de Coligni] spoils towns in Provence and Languedoc. Capture of a castle of the Duke of Shoteleroye [Chatellerault] in Scotland. Adverse effect of the papal bull excommunicating the Queen on the satisfactory conclusion of her negotiations with the Queen of Scots. The consultation of the Earl of Southampton and the Bishop of Ross, resulting in the detention of the former.
