Details of MSS 257
Reference: MSS 257
Title: GENEALOGY AND HERALDRY
Description:

Folio containing three geneological and heraldic manuscripts written in the early 17th cent. They are as follows:

(1) Genealogies in two sections written in the same hand of extant English Baronies and Earldoms with shields or arms in colour, and, for the Earldoms only, crests and mottoes.

The first section contains Baronies. An early foliation (ff.1-174) indicates that some leaves have been removed or torn out, and a list of contents made prior to the foliation shows that some of these contained genealogies and others continued the manuscript after f.174.

The omitted leaves in this section are: ff.31-3, 73-4, 85-8 (Cromwell), 137-40 (Egerton), 142-3 (Russell of Thornhaugh and Grey of Groby), 146, 157-8 (Gerald of Bromley), 165, 173, 175-c.187.

The second section contains Earldoms and is omitted from the index.

The omitted pages in this section are: pp.1-22, 35-6, 39-44, 111-12, 127-8, 187-8, 212-16, 227-8, 237-64, 273-4.

(2) 'All the Erles, Viscounts and Barons of Ireland created and made by vertue of there Majesties letters patent from King James and King Charles', with shields of arms elegantly drawn and in most instances crests and mottoes, probably written in Ireland, c.1627.

(3) 96 pedigrees of French noble families copied from an original containing 38 leaves, with an index of titles, early 17th cent.
