At the time of his death Lord Jackson was Pro Rector of Imperial College and also held a chair in the Department of Electrical Engineering which he had formerly administered. The papers listed here include the professional and working correspondence transferred to the archives from his college office, and also some personal material.

 

The papers were not in their original format when they were received in the archives and it has been necessary to establish an artificial arrangement. Files, etc. which were preserved in their original order have been marked with an asterisk in the list. The abbreviation 'WJ' has been used for references to Lord Jackson. If there are only one or two letters from a correspondent the number of letters is given; otherwise there is a covering date for the period of the correspondence only.

1922 - 5 University of Manchester, Engineering Department. Awarded 1st class honours degree in Electrical Engineering, 1925.

 

1925 - 6 Part-time lecturer in Electrical Engineering, Burnley Municipal College.

 

1926 MSc, University of Manchester.

 

1926 - 9 Lecturer in Electrical Engineering, Bradford Technical College.

 

1929 - 30 Graduate apprentice, Metropolitan Vickers.

 

1930 - 3 Lecturer in Electrical Engineering, Manchester College of Technology.

 

1933 - 6 Postgraduate student at Magdalen College, Oxford; tutor in Engineering Science to several colleges.

 

1936 D.Phil, University of Oxford; DSc, University of Manchester.

 

1936 - 8 Research Engineer, Metropolitan Vickers.

 

1938 Marriage to Mary Elizabeth Boswall.

 

1938 - 46 Professor of Electrotechnics, University of Manchester.

1953 Elected Fellow of the Royal Society.

1958 Received knighthood.

 

1961 - 7 Professor of Electrical Engineering and Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Imperial College. Retired as Head of the Department in 1967.

 

1967 Awarded life peerage.
