Administrative / biographical background:

The Literary Reading Society was founded in 1894. The rules, revised in 1902, indicate that the main purpose of the members was 'the reading of standard plays and other literature without dramatic action. Parts were divided up by the host and ballotted for by the members, and the minutes consist almost wholly of a record of plays read and members attending. As F.W. Baxter was involved in the Society, whose members lived in or near Stoke Newington, it has been assumed that he was the likely depositer with the Library.
