Administrative / biographical background:

Richard Pye was established as a cardboard box manufacturer at St. John Street, Finsbury in 1850; in 1866 he expanded into additional premises at Nelson Street (latterly Mora Street) Finsbury. In 1899 the firm leased purpose built factory premises at Britannia Street, Shoreditch. In 1941 both Britannia Street and Mora Street were blitzed; the bomb that fell on the Mora Street premises destroyed virtually all the companies records. The Britannia Street site was rebuilt and reopened in 1949. In 1960 the company was taken over by C. A. Coutts Ltd.
