Title: J. & W. NICHOLSON & CO LTD (COMPANY & FAMILY RECORDS)
Description:

The records in this deposit do not constitute the whole of the Company archives. They include records of the partnership prior to the formation of the limited company, a substantial quantity of purchasing and accounting records, production records which include receipe books, sales records and some partial records of staff. Nicholsons loaned out money to many publicans and there are records of these loans and associated deeds. The premises at Bow, the Three Mills Distillery, were adjacent to the Lee and the changes to the course of that river, in many cases contended by the Company, are well documented. Members of the Nicholson family had an antiquarian interest in the history of the Three Mills site, and the collection also includes research papers.

In addition there are some records of two associated companies and a new trading venture, the Three Mills Bonded Warehouses Ltd.

The family interests were not always clearly distinguished from the business ones, but include wills of some of the Nicholsons and records of personal estates, including holdings at Stoke Newington, Middx, Sheffield and William Nicholson's estate at Cheriton, Hants. The latter is especially rich in estate deeds the earliest of which is 1597.

Administrative / biographical background:

The distilling business of J. & W. Nicholson had its origins in London in the 1730s. The two main distilleries were in Clerkenwell and at Three Mills, Bromley by Bow, where the Nicholson connection went back to 1773.

Nicholsons became a limited company in 1892, though it remained very much a family firm. In the period after the Second World War the company diversified into hotels and related areas. It is now part of the Allied Lyons Group, and has ceased to be directly involved in distilling, having been reconstituted as a catering company.
