Administrative / biographical background:

The London and Suburban Land and Building Company was formed after the 11th annual general meeting of the London and Suburban Freehold Land and Building Society in 1863. The latter had been one of the associations set up to enable members to buy freehold land and so obtain a vote. It was established in 1852.

The new Company bought small amounts of property thoughout London and the suburbs, and rented them out on long leases. This included land in the Clapton Park Estate (Homerton, Hackney and Lower Clapton) and at Grove Road, Victoria Park. In recent years once the lease has expired, the property has been sold to the sitting tenant.

In the early years of the Company there were financial difficulties and at one point the then company secretary absconded. The firm was saved by its accountant, a Mr Neville, who obtained control of the Company. In 1973 his son sold it to Clarebrooke Holdings/Wiltonbridge Ltd.
