Description:

An important and extensive collection of personal and official correspondence, memoranda, battle orders and maps, covering the period 1902 - 1950 but mainly relating to his First World War service in Egypt and Palestine as Commander of Eastern Force and from autumn 1917, XX Corps, Egyptian Expeditionary Force, December 1916 - October 1918, concerning in particular the capture, defence and supply of El Arish; the Second Battle of Gaza (April 1917); the establishment of defensive lines and trench warfare; the replacement of Sir Archibald Murray as Commander in Chief EEF with Sir Edmund Allenby and the preparations for an autumn offensive in 1917; the Battle of Beersheba and the Third Battle of Gaza (October - November 1917); the capture of Jerusalem and its defence from Turkish counter-attack (December 1917); and the capture of Jericho (February 1918) and crossing of the river Jordan. Among the papers are letters from many important figures including General Sir Edmund Allenby, Sir Winston and Lady Clementine Churchill, the Earl of Clarendon, the Dalai Lama, General G P Dawnay, General Sir Charles Dobell, Field Marshal Sir John French, General A L Lynden-Bell, Lord Louis Mountbatten, General Sir Archibald Murray, General Sir Robert Whigham and Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson; the collection also contains Chetwode's passport and identity documents, certificates relating to his many awards and honours, and correspondence regarding Lady Chetwode's estate.
