Description:

Account of customs on the cargoes of two ships leaving Cardiff and the members thereof, from Michaelmas to Christmas 1642.

 

Petition of Captain Dick and Thomas Cunningham, that a goodly ship of 30 pieces of ordnance and a frigate of 14 pieces, tendered by them, may be employed against the rebels.

 

Petition of Henry Slingesby. Petitioner went into France, leaving all his deeds and documents under lock and key in his mother's house. She in his absence possessed herself of his deeds, etc. Prays that she may be called upon to deliver up the deeds.

 

Petition of John Puntæus. By grant from His Majesty before the late troubles in England petitioner practised as a physician in Scotland. Prays for liberty to follow his profession anywhere in England.

Request from Richard Sherburne, of Stoniers, in the county of Lancaster, that he may have leave to go to the waters of Bourbon.

 

Petition of several poor workmen and labourers in His Majesty's works at Whitehall and elsewhere. Great sums of money are due to petitioners for wages.

 

Petition of the eight rulers of the watermen. Complain of the unruly conduct of certain of the watermen upon the river Thames.

 

Petition of Abraham Pont, gent. Petitioner, by a former petition, complained of the oppressions done to him by the Bishop of Raphoe. Prays that a day may be appointed for hearing his complaint.

 

Petition of Dame Anne Herris, widow, for leave to proceed at law against John Earl of Bridgewater for recovery of a debt, notwithstanding the Earl's privilege.

 

Petition of divers copyholders of the manor of the augmentation of Kenilworth, in the county of Warwick. Petitioners, ever since the dissolution of the Abbey of Kenilworth, have continued copyholders for lives in the manor for moderate fines. The manor was granted, to Robert Lord Carye, Baron of Leppington [created Earl of Monmouth], and regranted unto Henry Earl of Monmouth, who has altered and subverted the customs.

 

Petition of Edward Johnson, of the Inner Temple, Esquire. Prays that no order may be made upon the Earl of Leicester's petition touching certain lands called Astell Grove, parcel of the manor and castle of Kenilworth, until petitioner has been heard.

 

Petition of Francis Lord Willoughby of Parham. Petitioner sued forth a writ for the extending of certain lands of the manor of Sketting-thorpe, in the county of Lincoln, acknowledged to him by one Stone, since deceased, for a debt. Sir Edward Herne, the High Sheriff of Lincolnshire, being now in actual war against the Parliament, petitioner cannot procure the extent to be executed.

 

Petition of parishioners of St Andrew, Holborn, that Mr Vere Harcourt, brother of the late Sir Symon Harcourt, may be appointed their lecturer, in the room of Dr Gauden.

 

Petition of Anne Grenewell, widow. Petitioner's late husband, William Grenewell, bought a 24th part of the French Wine Farm. Prays that Sir Nicholas Salter, the surviving patentee, and Sir Henry Garway and others, executors of the late Sir William Garway, the other patentee, may be ordered to pay her certain monies due to her late husband.

 

Petition of John Scoble and Mary Scoble, widow, complaining of great oppression at the hands of John Fortescue, of East Allington, in the county of Devon, the lord of the manor there.

 

Petition of Thomas Skelton, servant to Thomas Lord Wentworth, arrested at Yarmouth at the suit of Thomas Spooner and others, contrary to privilege.

 

Petition of Edmond Savile. Has been imprisoned in the Fleet for not paying an annuity to William Meering, in compliance with an order of the Court of Requests.

 

Petition of John Stone and others, inhabitants of North-more (North Moor), Oxon, complaining of the oppressions and abuses of Gowyn Champneys, one of the Chancery clerks.

 

Petition of John Stephens and others, parishioners of Bisly, Gloucestershire, that Mr Britton may have liberty to officiate in the church there, the present vicar, Daniel Leyford, being now in the King's Bench Prison for debt.

Petition of Edward Trussell; mercer, Thomas Tutt, mercer, Edward Griffith, and William Scarborowe. Petitioners supplied Lewis Boyle, Viscount Killamakun (Kinalmeaky), with silks and wares for his marriage, he promising to pay ready money for the same, but now refuses to pay.

 

Petition of same, with others, that the Earl of Cork or his son, Viscount Kinalmeaky, may be directed speedily to pay to petitioners the sum due to them.

 

Petition of Thomas Gould, to hear his cause against Richard Prigg, clerk, touching the conveyance of certain lands at Ilchester and North-over.

 

Petition of Sir Edward Sydenham. By an order was allowed the benefit of the general order for securing all persons in the quiet enjoyment of their possessions. Prays that the affidavits of his witnesses may be admitted in evidence.

 

Petition of Gamaliel Carr and Edmond Brewer, clerks. Daniel Strutt and Richard Browne, his uncle, of Castle Hedingham, being at strife, it was referred to petitioners to settle peace between them. Strutt has since brought many vexatious suits against petitioners, who pray to be relieved from the matter.

Petition of John Long, gent., prisoner in the King's Bench. Complains of the cruelty of Sir John Lenthall, marshal of the prison, and prays for discharge.

 

Petition of Sir Michael Wharton, prays that Sir John Mounson's patent for the "meliorating and bettering of surrounded grounds" may be examined, and parties restored to their former possessions.

 

Petition of Richard Watts, gent., prisoner in the Fleet, for relief against John Rye, scrivener, of London, touching a mortgage of petitioner's estate at Culworth, in the county of Northampton.

 

Petition of Giles Wright, son and heir and administrator of William Wright, deceased, complaining of the unfair dealings of Sir Henry Spiller touching the purchase of the manor of Kingsey, in the county of Buckingham.

 

Petition of Robert Lane, to Edward Earl of Manchester, praying relief from his noble and kind kinsman, as he is in very great distress.

 

Petition of Bridget Vaughan, wife of James Vaughan, gent., commander of the Lord Cromwell's troop in the North of Ireland, to the Commissioners of the Irish business. Prays for relief, the rebels in Ireland having taken away all her husband's estate.

 

Petition of Digory Baker and Elizabeth his wife complaining of an unjust verdict obtained against them by Richard Smith by bribery and other unlawful means.

 

Petition of William Downe to the Earl of Pembroke and Montgomery. Having served in the Low Countries, returned to England and was appointed lieutenant of a company of foot. Was ordered into Devonshire, but falling sick has been under the surgeon's hands. Prays assistance in obtaining his arrears of pay.

 

Petition of Thomas Coode to Henry Earl of Holland, etc. Lieutenant Williams coming into the yard of Mrs Bigg in St Giles' by virtue of a commission directed to Captain Roger, took away a black nag which Mrs Bigg had bought of petitioner. Petitioner prays for the nag to be restored.

 

Petition of Roger Bragg, gent., to the Earl of Essex; petitioner's son, has without the consent listed himself under the command of Captain Owen, and now lies embarked in a ship at Tilbury Hope.

 

Petition of Elizabeth Leigh, late of Porter Downe [Portadown], in the county of Armagh, widow. At the death of her late husband she was possessed of a good estate which she was utterly deprived by the cruel and merciless rebels.

 

Petition of Nicholas Arnold. A verdict in law has lately been given against him: is desirous of lodging a writ of error.

 

Two drafts of order for Dugaurd Clarke, to be instituted to the rectory of Bradford alias Bereford.

 

Petition of the poor inhabitants of the city of Westminster, to the Earl of Pembroke, Lord Chamberlain: pray that Mr Robert White, who has been subcurate of the parish of St Margaret, Westminster, may not be displaced from his cure for the private ends of a few.

 

Petition of Lieutenant Colonel Audley Mervyn to Commissioners for Irish affairs: Sir Ralph Gore was commissioned to raise a regiment to oppose the rebels in Ireland; prays that now Sir Ralph Gore is dead, he may be appointed colonel.

 

Petition of Dame Margery Young, wife to Sir Peter Young: granted a pension in consideration of the services of Sir Peter; prays for the payment of the money due to her.

 

Petition of John Sherman: petitioner has served under the States of Holland, and the King of Portugal for six years past, and gained much experience in martial discipline; prays that some place of command may be conferred upon him.

 

Petition of John Miller, His Majesty's servant in ordinary as tailor to the Duke of Gloucester His Highness; has been arrested by Edward Trussell of London, mercer, contrary to privilege.

 

Petition of Thomas Edwards, sealer, at the Great Seal of England; prays for an examination of his place, and that he may have such fees and privileges as shall be found due to him.

Petition of Sarah the wife of Peter Treble of Wapping, mariner: petitioner's husband, now at sea, obtained a judgment against one William Penington in an action for assault; Penington is now trying to make out that he is protected by the Earl of Cleveland, when he is only a starchmaker, and follows his trade in Stepney.

 

Petition of Edward Ewell; has held the office of clerk and registrar in the Castle of Dover, but hears that an endeavour is being made by some to oust him from his office.

 

Petition of Mrs Margaret Moore and her children; petitioner lived in good condition in Ireland until the late rebellion despoiled of her livelihood.

 

Petition of creditors of John Cremer of Snettisham, in the county of Norfolk, against Robert Styleman, one of the feoffees in trust of Cremer's estate, who has provided for his own interest to the neglect of the other creditors.

 

Petition of William Street, one of His Majesty's littermen, a prisoner in Newgate; was arrested in Westminster Hall contrary to privilege, at the suit of Peter Williams, a brewer, for a pretended debt.

Petition of parishioners of Sundridge, in the county of Kent; pray that if Dr Hall should cease to be their minister, their Lordships would move the Archbishop of Canterbury to appoint Tobias Blosse.

 

Petition of the inhabitants of the parish of Sudbury St Gregory, and of the chapel of Sudbury St Peter's thereto annexed, in the county of Suffolk; Oliver Andrew, and John his brother deceased, became owners of the impropriation, and have ever since withheld great part of the ministers' stipends, have taken church dues, and injured the free school and hospital for lazars.

 

Petition of Elizabeth Moore, widow, to Edward Earl of Manchester; petitioner in the name of Patrick Winch exhibited a Bill in Chancery against one Carpenter for relief from an extent upon a house in Fleet Street; but his Lordship and Mr Speaker have ordered that Carpenter should be discharged.

 

Petition of Thomas Sumner; prisoner in the King's Bench by the means of Thomas Winch he is assessed at £20, and as this is threatened to be distrained from his tenants, they refuse to pay their rents.

 

Petition of Nicholas Wylliot, a Frenchman, to the Earl of Manchester, Speaker to the House of Peers. Petitioner being commanded with others to perform the duty of fetching of prisoners, and resistance being made, there happened to be a man slain by one of the party. For which action petitioner has been laid up in Newgate. Prays that he may be tried by a jury of his own countrymen.

 

Petition of Hugh Rosse, late His Majesty's servant at Dunkirk, in Flanders; petitioner was for many years employed by the State for the release of English subjects, prisoners in Flanders, and in this service spent large sums of his own money.

Petition of Brian Smith, coachman. Petitioner has for the last quarter of a year attended with his coach and horses upon Thomas Viscount Wentworth, and there is now due to him upwards of £34.

 

Petition of divers of the inhabitants of Pinner, in the county of Middlesex. The curate of Pinner, which is a chapel of ease to the mother church of Harrow, seldom preaches. Petitioners pray that they may have liberty to make choice of a lecturer, whom they will maintain at their own charge.

 

Petition of John Gerrard, late postmaster at Brickhill, in the county of Bucks; petitioner and his ancestors have enjoyed the place of postmaster for nearly fifty years, yet Mr Thomas Witherings sold the place to another. Prays that he may be restored to his place, or that Witherings may be ordered to give him recompense for the loss of it.

 

Petition of inhabitants of Cransley, in the county of Northampton. The late Sir Henry Robinson left a legacy for the repair of the vicarage house, which is now in ruins, but the executors have neglected to repair it.

 

Draft letter from [the Speaker of the House of Commons] to ----- respecting the disarming and dispersing of papists.
